Is all Mulch Created Equal?
There are so many options on the market for mulch, it is important to understand what you are purchasing and what you are laying around your home.
Our Hemlock and Pine are produced out of BARK. These products contain at least 80% bark - there is No dye or additives to these products. The bark aids in the color longevity, for a piece of bark is naturally the same color all the way through. This will help the mulch maintain its color far longer than wood chips. As bark mulch breakdown, it releases macro-nutrients, such as phosphorus and potassium, that are added back into your soil. Lastly, large quantities of tannins are found in bark which act as a barrier to micro-organisms such as bacteria and fungi.
Black mulch is almost always a dyed mulch (there are products on the market that have been naturally aged to create a deep, dark color.) Even dyed mulches have some differentiating factors. What kind of wood has it been processed out of? Are there 'fillers' such as ground pallets or demolition material? Is a liquid dye used or granular? These and some factors to consider when choosing black mulch. Our Black Mulch has been double ground, with a granular dye, and is made with soft wood - no fillers. Granular dye darkens with rain, while a liquid tends to run. The double ground gives a nice light, fluffy look to the mulch.
I encourage you to come and see the difference, you are welcome to take home a sample to do a side by side. We want you to love your mulch and feel good about what you choose.
